Oura Ring Review: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

by

Is the Oura Ring Worth the Hassle?

Let’s be real—my relationship with the Oura Ring is complicated. I’ve been wearing it for over two years, and while it offers some incredible insights into my health, it comes with its own fair share of quirks. From helping me track my well-being to the daily struggle of taking it off, the Oura Ring has been both a friend and a foe. Let’s dive into the good, the bad, and the ugly of this high-tech ring.

The Good: Tracking Your Way to Better Health

There’s no denying the Oura Ring’s impressive tracking capabilities:

  • Sleep Tracking: This feature is a game-changer. With precise monitoring of my sleep stages—deep, REM, and light—it’s helped me pinpoint patterns affecting my sleep quality. I discovered, for example, that alcohol significantly cut into my deep sleep, which prompted me to make adjustments. If optimizing sleep is a priority for you, the Oura Ring offers insights few other wearables can.
  • Activity Tracking: While it’s not a dedicated fitness tracker, the Oura Ring does a decent job of logging daily movement, calories burned, and active minutes. It’s especially beneficial for someone like me who runs long distances; the activity data offers a helpful baseline for how active (or inactive) my day has been.
  • Readiness Score: Based on a combination of sleep, activity, heart rate variability (HRV), and other metrics, this daily score has become my go-to guide for planning workouts and rest days. It’s particularly useful for athletes, offering insight into whether your body is ready for a hard workout or needs a break.
  • Durability and Cost-Effectiveness: Made of titanium, the Oura Ring is almost indestructible, which is crucial for a piece of tech worn constantly. And at a similar price to a premium titanium wedding ring, it doubles as my wedding band—a smart way to make the investment feel even more worthwhile!

The Bad: The Downsides of the Oura Ring

  • Battery Life: While it only takes about 1.5 hours to charge, the battery life—lasting just three days—is inconvenient. The frequent recharging can be a hassle, especially when traveling, as I always have to remember to pack the charger.

The Ugly: The Struggle is Real (Especially When Taking It Off)

Let’s address the elephant in the room (or rather, on my finger). Taking off the Oura Ring has become a daily struggle that I sometimes dread. It’s such a tight fit that it takes several minutes of gentle twisting, and I’ve developed a callus on my knuckle from the repeated effort. In fact, I sometimes avoid charging it altogether just to avoid the hassle of removing it. But if I do have to take it off, I use hand lotion (Jergens is my go-to) to make the process a bit smoother.

If you want to see this struggle in action, check out my YouTube video below where I document the ups and downs of removing the Oura Ring!

Tips and Tricks for Oura Ring Users

If you’re already wearing the Oura Ring or considering it, here are a few hacks that might make it easier:

  1. Removing the Ring: The best approach I’ve found is a combination of gentle twisting and patience. Don’t rush it.
  2. Moisturize: Lotion can be your best friend! A dab of Jergens or similar lotion can make it much easier to remove.
  3. Charging Schedule: To avoid frequent removal, I charge the ring during specific downtimes (like when I’m watching TV) to keep battery issues minimal.

Is the Oura Ring Worth It?

The Oura Ring is undeniably a powerful tool for anyone serious about tracking their health and biometrics. If you value detailed sleep analysis, readiness scores for training, and can handle the quirks—battery life, comfort, and the sometimes awkward removal process—then the Oura Ring could be a valuable addition to your wellness toolkit.

However, if ease of use is your top priority, you might want to consider alternatives. As for me, I’m committed to the data and insights, but I also accept that it’s not a perfect device. The question of whether the Oura Ring is “worth it” really depends on how serious you are about tracking your health metrics and how willing you are to handle a few inconveniences along the way.
